Supporting Clients From the Inside Out
A Recorded Training for Therapists, Dietitians, Coaches, and Healthcare Professionals
Body image is one of the most common and challenging issues clients bring to therapy. Even experienced clinicians can feel underprepared when body image concerns emerge, uncertain how to move beyond the surface and explore the underlying emotions, beliefs, and patterns beneath.
Led by Body Image Inside Out co-authors Whitney Otto, MA, PCC, and Deb Schachter, LICSW, alongside co-facilitator Alex Smith, MSW, this half-day training introduces the Body Image Inside Out framework and invites participants into a different kind of body image conversation—one that views negative body image not as a problem to solve, but as a message worth translating.
Together, we'll explore how body image often lives at the intersection of relationships, emotions, sensation, identity, and belonging—and how greater curiosity can create new possibilities for healing and change. Through teaching, clinical examples, experiential exercises, and discussion, you'll learn how to help clients become more skillful at listening to, interpreting, and responding to their body image experiences.
With warmth, humor, and practical clinical tools, we'll weave together concepts from Internal Family Systems, mindfulness, attachment theory, somatic awareness, and cognitive behavioral approaches to help you feel more confident and effective in your body image work.
In This Training, You'll Learn:
A new framework for helping clients develop a relationship with their body image
How to shift your mindset from resolving to relating to your clients' body image struggles, and how privileging your own curiosity can serve as a powerful model—one that clients can internalize as they learn to relate differently to their own body image experiences
How to identify BBIMs (Bad Body Image Moments), interrupt recurring body image cycles, and help clients use these experiences as opportunities for deeper awareness, insight, and self-resourcing
How to help your clients build body image “muscles” to help them navigate BBIM’s more skillfully
How relational "shapeshifting" develops as an adaptive strategy to preserve connection, belonging, and safety—and how to help clients better understand and navigate the complex interplay between body image and their relational experiences
How to use sensory and somatic awareness as a clinical entry point to a deeper understanding of the function of negative body image and an opportunity to tend to what it is expressing
Who Is This Training For?
Therapists, social workers, dietitians, coaches, occupational therapists, physicians, psychiatrists, and anyone who supports people in bodies—which, as it turns out, is all of us.
